O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in early 2005, while she was a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 round. O'Neil was given high marks from jury. But she was a victim of massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, followed by the second place. Judges were amazed by her performance and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil, who had been consistently delivering stellar performance since then, always finished in the third place. The performance she gave on the 7th September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
